Being set into the hillside the view from the temple out over the red and orange leaves below is striking. Kyoto is big on our list because I’ve heard that the food there is outstanding. （2）There were no places to see here. [separator type=”thick”]A large Zen temple complex with a stunning garden, it’s the major temple visited in the area and is beautiful but crowded during sakura (blossom) and koyo (autumn leaves) seasons.

It’s a short stop but quite beautiful. Keep the noise and commotion in Tokyo and Osaka, if you ask me!For me, the highlight of Kyoto is just the quiet walks at night around the alleys and then the absolute hysteria that seems to fill these places during the holidays.

Clad in gold leaf it’s especially striking but can be a little crowded so pick your timing.

I’ll have to look up the book by David Keene, I’ve read quite a bit on Japanese history (and books based loosely on history) but not that one. Kyoto has a lot of places to visit. In this articles I’m considering only the Buddhist temples, there are also many beautiful shrines but the two can’t really be compared so they deserve their own article.Many temples are important historic and cultural spaces that are extremely expensive to maintain, for this reason most of the ones tourists are likely to visit will charge a small fee. When we finally get there, I’ll make sure to visit some of these temples, especially your must-see Sanjusangen-do. We loved Kyoto & visited many of the spots you post about. One of the most attractive temples in Kyoto, Tofuku-ji Temple also has the advantage of not being very crowded unless you come during the fall foliage season.
